A future center of excellence for railway professions

Located in Saintes, Charente-Maritime (17), FERROCAMPUS is one of the structuring projects dedicated to railway training and innovation in Nouvelle-Aquitaine.

Developed on the site of the SNCF technical centre, this future training centre aims to become a reference place for railway sector professions, by bringing together educational, technical and collaborative spaces within the same environment.

With a floor area of 2,880 m², the project includes, in particular:

  • training rooms

  • educational spaces

  • conference rooms

  • technical areas dedicated to learning and professional uses

Beyond its educational vocation, FERROCAMPUS also carries out a global reflection on construction methods and material choices.

An environmental approach integrated into the project

FERROCAMPUS is part of a constructive approach focused on environmental performance and the sustainability of buildings.

The project incorporates several key technical orientations:

  • RE2020 target, 2025 threshold

  • energy production by geothermal energy

  • concrete and wood facades

  • BDNA approach oriented towards the environmental coherence of the building

This approach is not limited to technical equipment or the building's structure. It also concerns the materials used in interior spaces and their ability to be sustainably integrated into the project.

Absolin's intervention on the FERROCAMPUS project

As part of this project, Absolin plaster was chosen to be applied to the perimeter walls made of wood-concrete.

This choice is part of a logic of adapting to the technical constraints of the medium while meeting the environmental expectations of the project.

Wall coverings now play a more important role in sustainable building projects. Beyond their aesthetic function, they contribute to:

  • to the overall coherence of spaces

  • to the stability of the finishes over time

  • to adapting to complex media

  • to the quality of use of the buildings

In a project like FERROCAMPUS, the compatibility between the material, the support and the implementation becomes essential.

Absolin application

The challenge of concrete and wood supports

Concrete-wood walls have specific characteristics that require special attention when applying wall coverings.

These materials may be subject to:

  • humidity variations

  • micro-movements

  • differences in absorption

  • constraints related to drying and preparation

The success of the project therefore depends as much on the choice of coating as on the quality of the implementation.

In this context, the preparation of the substrates, the management of application times and the mastery of the technique become crucial to ensure the consistency of the final result and the durability of the applied system.

A comprehensive view of the building

The FERROCAMPUS project illustrates the current evolution of the building sector: materials are no longer selected solely for their visual appearance or immediate cost.

They are now integrated into a broader discussion concerning:

  • the durability of the structures

  • environmental coherence

  • the compatibility of construction systems

  • the stability of the finishes over time

This approach leads professionals to pay increasing attention to bio-based materials and their actual behavior on construction sites.

Implementation at the heart of performance

As with many technical projects, the success of the intervention also depends on mastering the implementation.

Preparation of the substrate, adaptation to site constraints, regularity of application and coordination of the different stages directly determine the final quality of the result.

In demanding professional projects, this rigor allows for:

  • to limit the disruptions

  • to secure the achievements

  • to ensure better stability over time

FERROCAMPUS: a project geared towards the future

Through FERROCAMPUS , the railway sector is equipping itself with a modern training tool, designed to meet the future challenges of transport and innovation.

For Absolin, working on this type of project also represents an opportunity to participate in projects where construction choices, materials and sustainability play a central role.
